Online advertising network Adconion Media Group is acquiring direct marketing and data management company Frontline Direct for USD20m in cash and stock. Frontline specialises in email marketing and database management. Adconion will integrate Frontline's operations within the ad networks' existing offering in a bid to expand into the North American market. Adconion says it intends to open a new office in San Diego to add to existing operations in New York, Santa Monica and Toronto.
The purchase follows the recent USD80m Series C funding received by Adconion in February from Index Ventures and Wellington Partners. Adconion claims to serve almost 300m ad impressions globally per day, with around 50m coming from the US alone.

Three Rings raises USD3.5m from True Ventures
Games developer Three Rings has received USD3.5m in funding, reports VentureBeat. The round was led by True Ventures, who provided USD3m. The rest came from Chance Technologies and return investors, Amicus Capital and Mercury Capital.
The online games company was founded in 2001, with its first Java-created game, 'Puzzle Pirates' entering beta in Jul 2003. Initially the game was offered on a subscription basis, but this was later switched to virtual currency.The firm has 30 employees and is currently developing a social networking game called 'Whirled'. Three Rings claims to have raised USD4m in revenue in 2007.

KPCB launches USD100m fund for iPhone apps development
Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byer (KPCB) is creating a USD100m fund to invest in applications for AppleĆ¢€™s iPhone, following the release of Apple's software development kit. The iFund will aim to aid developers of applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch, focusing on applications dealing with location-based services, social networking, mobile commerce solutions and entertainment products. Part of the investment goal is to create a stable of development firms that are dedicated to continually producing applications for Apple devices.
Official third-party applications are expected to be available on the iPhone from Jun. Developers are already planning applications for an anticipated massive release of third-party software for a wide range of functions.
In addition to direct investment capital, KPCB will also provide business development advice to participating developers and will provide access to its network of partners and industry contacts. The iFund will be led by KPCB partners John Doerr, Matt Murphy, Bill Joy, Randy Komisar, Ted Schlein, Chi-Hua Chien and Ellen Pao.
